Waterjet Cutting Glass: Tempered, Laminated & Architectural Glass Guide

Glass is one of the most difficult materials to cut precisely. It is brittle, has no ductility, and propagates cracks along pre-existing surface micro-fissures when mechanical force is applied. Diamond-wheel scoring and snap breaking — the traditional glass cutting method — cannot produce complex shapes, cannot cut laminated structures, and cannot cut tempered glass at all (tempered glass shatters entirely when the surface compression layer is breached).

Pure waterjet cutting (without abrasive) has emerged as the precision method of choice for glass fabrication applications that demand shape complexity, tight tolerances, or multi-layer cutting. This guide covers the process principles, material capabilities, and reference parameters for WONLEAN pure waterjet glass cutting systems.

Pure Waterjet vs Abrasive Waterjet for Glass: Why the Distinction Matters

WONLEAN waterjet machines can run in two modes: pure waterjet (water only, no abrasive) and abrasive waterjet (water + garnet). For glass cutting, pure waterjet is the correct mode for most applications up to 20–25 mm thickness. The reasons:

  • Edge quality: Pure waterjet produces a smoother, less micro-fractured edge than abrasive waterjet on glass. Abrasive particles create additional surface damage on the inherently brittle glass edge.
  • Contamination: Garnet abrasive embeds in the glass surface and is difficult to clean from cut edges. Pure waterjet leaves the edge chemically clean.
  • Thickness limits: Above 25–30 mm glass (e.g. thick optical glass blocks, bulletproof multi-laminate panels), abrasive waterjet at reduced flow rate may be appropriate — consult WONLEAN engineers for specific configurations.

ⓘ  Key process principle: Pure waterjet cuts glass by micro-erosion — the high-velocity water stream removes glass particles at the cutting front before stress waves can propagate ahead of the cut. The critical parameter is feed rate: too fast introduces cracking ahead of the jet; too slow causes surface erosion beside the intended cut line. WONLEAN's glass cutting parameter library covers 47 glass types from 3 mm float to 50 mm borosilicate.

Glass Types and Cutting Capabilities

Glass Type Waterjet Mode Max Thickness Key Application
Float glass (clear/tinted) Pure waterjet 19 mm Shaped windows, shower screens, furniture glass
Laminated safety glass (PVB) Pure waterjet 25 mm (2×10 + interlayer) Automotive windshields, architectural safety glazing
Tempered glass (pre-temper blank) Pure waterjet 15 mm Cut to shape before tempering; post-temper cutting is not possible
Borosilicate / Pyrex Pure waterjet 25 mm Lab equipment panels, industrial sight glasses
Decorative / patterned glass Pure waterjet 10 mm Mosaic inlay, backlit panels, interior design elements
Bulletproof multi-laminate Abrasive waterjet (low flow) 60 mm+ Vehicle and architectural ballistic glazing

Reference Cutting Parameters (Pure Waterjet, Float Glass)

Thickness Pressure Cutting Speed Orifice Dia. Edge Finish
3 mm 200 – 250 MPa 1,000 – 1,500 mm/min 0.15 mm Clean / chip-free
6 mm 250 – 300 MPa 600 – 900 mm/min 0.20 mm Smooth / light frosting
10 mm 300 – 340 MPa 300 – 500 mm/min 0.25 mm Fine / polishable direct
19 mm 350 – 380 MPa 100 – 200 mm/min 0.30 mm Industrial finish

* Laminated glass (PVB interlayer) requires a 15–20% speed reduction vs. equivalent float glass thickness. The PVB layer has different erosion resistance; speed must be tuned to avoid delamination at the interlayer.

Key Application Areas for Glass Waterjet Cutting

Architectural Glazing Shaped glass panels, curved-corner windows, circular skylights, staircase balustrades — all profiles cut from float or laminated glass directly from DXF drawings.
Decorative Interior Glass mosaic inlay, backlit feature panels, etched decorative screens. Complex geometries and interlocking shapes cut to ±0.1 mm — impossible with diamond wheel scoring.
Automotive Glass Blanks Pre-temper glass blanks cut to exact body-in-white profile before entering the tempering furnace. Enables complex window shapes without hand grinding.
Optical & Scientific Glass Borosilicate panels, quartz optical flats, and sight glass discs. Pure waterjet leaves no thermal stress in the material — critical for optical performance.

Important: What Waterjet Cannot Do with Glass

Waterjet glass cutting has two well-defined limitations that buyers should understand before specifying:

  • Cannot cut already-tempered glass: Fully tempered glass is under surface compression stress. Any penetration — waterjet, drill, or score — releases this stress and shatters the panel. All cutting must occur before the tempering step. This is standard practice in glass fabrication and waterjet fits naturally into the pre-temper cutting stage.
  • Polished optical finish requires secondary polishing: Waterjet cut glass edges are smooth but not optically clear. Applications requiring a polished clear edge (e.g. frameless glass furniture, decorative mirrors) need a secondary edge polishing step — WONLEAN can advise on compatible polishing process integration.

Request a Glass Cutting Sample

Send WONLEAN your glass type, thickness, and desired cut profile — we will cut a sample at our factory and return the cut pieces with edge quality photographs and a parameter report. For complex decorative profiles, we accept DXF files and cut directly to your drawing.
